I joined Musical Production Society (MPS) in my first year at York St John University and worked my way up into the committee. From 2023-2024, I was the society’s Choreographer and worked as part of the creative team.

 

This included creating a variety of dances and stage fights that were accessible to all members; planning rehearsals to teach all this choreography; and casting for our winter showcase and the summer production of Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.

 

It was interesting to work on the technical side of performing, collaborating with the production team to create lighting designs and perfect set changes so that everything would run smoothly on stage. I also found it fun to come up with adaptions for different movements and see everyone’s dance ability grow.

 

This experience allowed me to find my voice when running sessions, as putting on a full-scale musical is complex but incredibly rewarding.

 

Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical was performed at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre (York) in May 2024.
